Calacatta Viola is an exquisite Italian marble from the legendary quarries of Carrara. Distinguished by its dramatic, high-contrast appearance, it features a creamy white background swept with bold, fluid veins ranging from deep burgundy and violet to rich cabernet. This "expressionist" stone is favored for statement applications like waterfall islands, luxury vanities, and focal-point fireplaces.
Historically known as Breccia Medicea, this marble was a favorite of the powerful Medici family in Florence, where its regal purple hues symbolized nobility. Its unique coloration is the result of rare geological processes involving manganese and iron, making it a sophisticated alternative to traditional gold-veined Calacatta.
This lot is a new arrival at our Los Angeles yard.
Lot 12742 is a 13-slab run of 2 cm Calacatta Viola marble, from Italy, in a honed finish. The slabs measure about 126″ × 77″, with 10 slabs available and 3 on hold at our Los Angeles yard.
This slab
The recorded size of a slab in this lot is 126″ × 77″, about 67 square feet. Thickness is 2 cm. The color on record is white with lilac, grey, and green. Natural stone still varies inside that description, so the slab itself is the reference for movement and shade. This material is recorded as quarried in Italy.
The honed finish is smooth and matte, without a high gloss. Two centimeters is a standard slab thickness for counters, vanities, and wall cladding.

Where it works
For this kind of stone, the usual applications are bathrooms, vanities, fireplace surrounds, and feature walls. The right use still depends on the finish, the thickness, and how the slab will be cared for after it is installed. Inspiration photos show this stone in a Fireplace and a Kitchen.
The material
Marble is a metamorphic stone, recrystallized from limestone, and it is valued for veining and a luminous surface. It is softer and more sensitive to acids than granite or quartzite, so wine, citrus, and strong cleaners can etch a polish. That is why it is a classic for bathrooms, vanities, fireplaces, and walls, and for kitchens when the owner wants the look and will live with a natural patina. A honed face shows etching less than a high polish. Vein direction should be planned on the actual slabs before fabrication.
