Lapis Lazuli

OTHER MATERIALS

Intense ultramarine defines this semi-precious slab of lapis lazuli, built from angular pieces flecked with white and scattered with tiny gold-colored glints. The tone moves between royal blue and near-navy across the surface, giving a saturated field of color with very little neutral relief.

About Lapis Lazuli

Rather than a single mineral, lapis lazuli is a rock: its blue comes mainly from lazurite, the white streaks are usually calcite, and the metallic sparkle is pyrite. It has been valued as an ornamental stone and a pigment source for thousands of years. On this slab it becomes a dense, crystalline mosaic of faceted pieces, each one set individually.

Its relative softness and sensitivity to acids and abrasive cleaners point it toward walls, tabletops, bar fronts and powder-room vanities rather than heavy-use kitchen counters. It is opaque, so it is chosen for color rather than backlighting. Thickness can range from 0.6 to 4 cm around a 2 cm standard, and pieces are made to measure up to 320 x 190 cm. Ordering runs through Modul Marble.
