Obsidian

Formed when lava cools too quickly for crystals to grow, obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, which is why it polishes to such a dark, reflective finish. Metal-colored lines are inlaid between the hand-cut pieces, and the insert options cover gold (imitation or real), silver, brass, copper and stainless steel, so other combinations can be discussed.

The contrast is graphic and formal, at home on bars, lobby walls, fireplace surrounds, bathroom feature walls and furniture. As a glass, obsidian can chip at sharp corners, so eased edges and protection from hard knocks make sense on horizontal surfaces. Each slab is sized to the job, up to 320 x 190 cm, and is 2 cm thick unless a thinner (from 0.6 cm) or thicker (up to 4 cm) build is specified.
