Labradorite

OTHER MATERIALS

This semi-precious slab is built from blue-gray labradorite, many of its pieces catching the light in flashes of electric blue that appear and fade with the viewing angle. A second version sets polished ammonite fossils into the stone at intervals, adding warm amber spirals to the cool blue-gray.

About Labradorite

The flashes come from labradorescence, a play of color produced as light scatters between thin internal layers of this feldspar. Fitted by hand with fine joints, the irregular pieces scatter that effect in random patches across a smoky gray ground, with no repeating pattern to give away the assembly.

Because the effect depends on angle and light, the slab rewards placements people move around: island ends, bar fronts, entry walls and furniture tops. Ammonite inlays, available in diameters from 4 to 25 cm, turn a panel into a feature piece. The standard slab is 2 cm thick, with 0.6 to 4 cm made to order and dimensions up to 320 x 190 cm. Clean it with a mild neutral product and avoid abrasive pads that could dull the polish.
